French champagne invests in Emilia-Romagna

Val Trebbia

From Reims, known throughout the world as the French capital of champagne, to Rivergaro, a small tourist destination nestling among the hills of the Trebbia Valley, in the Piacentino mountain region. It is here that champagne house Pommery has opened its only Italian sales office. The company is owned by Vranken-Pommery Monopole, a quoted group which in 2008 achieved a revenue of 285.5 million euros and a profit of 16.9 million euros. Company managers opted for Rivergaro over Milan due to the quality of life which it offers. Other strengths of the area are its strategic position and proximity to motorway junctions. The new office, which employs 10 staff and oversees a network of 80 sales agents, is an ideal place to welcome customers, immersed in nature and far from traffic. The choice of location is highly strategic, given that Italy is the fifth largest European market for champagne in terms of volume and the third largest in terms of value. The figures confirm the rationality of this investment decision: in 2008 Vranken Pommery Italy sold 200,000 bottles and the forecast for the end of 2009 is 500,000 bottles.
