The Marzabotto paper mill, near Bologna, is going to become a green district after its traditional line has been divested. A group of entrepreneurs led by the Bologna company Dismeco Ltd. has invested 10 million euro into this industrial conversion project. The disused factory has a total surface area of 45,000 square metres and is going to implement the sustainable development philosophy by recycling used materials. The factory has already started recycling washing machines and other household appliances - around 500 items per day - and the treatment of computers and neon tubes is scheduled to start in September.
Other initiatives that are going to start are connected to renewable energy production and research on raw materials ¿ the latter being a joint project developed in cooperation with the universities of Bologna and Göteborg. The Marzabotto industrial conversion is a cutting edge project that has aroused international interest. Experts from China and Malta have studied it as a possible reference model.
A further development of this district will be connected to education and training initiatives, and to this end expressly designed educational spaces will be organized.
