Emilia-Romagna is distinguished by its high work productivity with respect to Italian and European averages. Its added regional value is almost 97 billion euro a year and between 2000 and 2007 grew by 26.5%. The mainstays of the region are industry and agriculture. On the other hand, in the tertiary sector, the diamond tip of productivity is represented by hotels and restaurants.
A varied and qualified supply of employment, to fully meet demands, reducing unemployment to physiological levels, with unemployment levels dropping 17.7% between 2000 and 2007 to reach 3%. With respect to national figures, the share of persons employed or seeking employment in Emilia-Romagna is considerably higher, touching upon 73%, while in the rest of Italy numbers do not even reach 63% (Istat, 2007).
The difference lies mainly in the persons employed, and among these, women. It is thanks to the high female participation in the employment market with respect to the rest of the population that Emilia-Romagna boasts a workforce above european average. The most immediate consequence is the highest number of families with more than one salary, but what should not be underestimated is a factor difficult to measure, that of the greater presence of women in society and local communities.
The varied and qualified supply of work in Emilia-Romagna tends more and more towards the world of atypical employment, a situation generated by highly specialised young new graduates and diploma holders, with an essential profile in a world of work demanding professionalism and flexibility.
These workers, as well as being able to count on a system of training that ensures thorough and in-depth preparation for work, can make use of a system that relies very much on contributions by companies to employ young researchers, but above all on ongoing specialisation and training, throughout the span of the working life time.
The public system too supports these workers through services and opportunities for professional improvement and qualification made available also on the web.
