Four universities, including the oldest in the world, that of Bologna, and decentralised faculties in the main cities of the region. A highly varied academic supply welcoming tens of thousands of university students and employing thousands of researchers, in the public and private sector. This is the face of education and training in Emilia-Romagna.
The region completes this supply with a network of masters and post-diploma and post-graduate training courses, but above all with attention to training geared to the needs of today: ongoing training, throughout the working life span, with professional qualification of the self-employed, skilled workers and at the same time increasingly flexible in line with market demands.
There are also numerous post-graduate and Masters courses managed directly by business associations: for example Assoform, linked to Confindustria, or Ecipar, a network created by Cna. In close collaboration with the associate companies, and thus highly sensitive to the variations and demands on the market, these bodies prepare and employ hundreds of young people a year.
Emilia-Romagna has a great talent in attracting human resources from abroad. In terms of percentage of foreign students, Bologna university has the largest number for any Italian university (5.1%), compared to the national average of 2.7%. (Source: Miur, 2006-2007).
