A region where the culture is at home
With 400 museums and art galleries, over 100 theatres, 1,300 libraries and 200 publishing houses, Emilia-Romagna is one of the top regions nationally for culture supply. The cinema tradition is also strong in the region: with 336 cinemas and 11 million spectators per year, Emilia-Romagna is among the first in Italy. But not only this: the municipal film library of Bologna boasts some of the most important film restoration laboratories worldwide.
Music is also a great passion and local tradition. Emilia-Romagna is the birthplace of may great musicians, starting from the opera composer Giuseppe Verdi. His music is known worldwide, also thanks to the performance of other illustrious artists from Emilia-Romagna, such as the conductor Arturo Toscanini and more recently Riccardo Muti, as well as the tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
From Verdi to today, many idols of contemporary Italian pop music were born and live in this region. Furthermore, the most famous international bands and artists choose Emilia-Romagna as a privileged venue for their tours.
Not only in the case of music: the region is also patron to painters such as Filippo De Pisis, Giorgio Morandi, Annibale Carracci and Giovanni Francesco Barbieri known as Guercino, of scientists such as Guglielmo Marconi, and is also the origin of products that are the pride of Italian industrial culture, such as Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and the motorbikes Ducati and Bimota.
Tourism: nature, art and the Riviera
Tourism in Emilia-Romagna also contributes to encouraging international interchange, with a comprehensive supply aimed every year at millions of visitors, and a competitive system of opportunities of Italian and foreign tourists.
The city of Ravenna, with its eight monuments (Basilica di San Vitale, Mausoleo di Galla Placidia, Mausoleo di Teodorico, Basilica di Sant’Apollinare Nuovo, Basilica di Sant’Apollinare in Classe, Battistero degli Ariani, Battistero Neoniano, Cappella di Sant’Andrea) and Ferrara “City of Renaissance” with the delta of the Po are recognised by Unesco as a heritage of humanity.
But the vocation for tourism in Emilia-Romagna is best expressed on the Romagna Riviera, traditional resort of holiday-makers from the whole of Europe. The beaches, night spots, and above all hotel accommodation make the Adriatic coast one of the most popular in Italy. Alongside the success of the seaside resorts, the region can boast an Apennine range gaining increasing attraction with visitors, also thanks to the well organised system of regional parks.
