Internationalisation

Expansion abroad of a company passes through the investment of economic and human capital over the borders, but also the export of goods. Emilia-Romagna is a region that has always looked abroad, in recent years in particular.

For the region, internationalisation means above all sales with foreign markets, also to be increased through production agreements and investments abroad. And to better serve markets across the border, many companies have set up production lines in countries with which business is most active.

To encourage relations with foreign markets, there is also a wide network of services in the region for businesses and for the promotion of the economic system.

Vocation in exports
As the second Italian region for exports for some years now, Emilia-Romagna’s tendency to look abroad is growing year by year: between 2000 and 2006 goods exports grew by 38 % while the regional portion with respect to Italy has increased to 13%. Sales have also shown positive results: in 2006 exports of Emilia-Romagna amounted to 41.3 billion euro. The main contributors to this increase in exports were Europe (Germany and France in particular) and USA. As regards the sectors, mechanics plays a dominant role and contributes over half the total value of regional exports, with the key contribution from the instrumental mechanics sub sector. Ceramics also represents a significant share of regional exports, followed by fashion and foodstuffs.

Investing abroad
The businesses of Emilia-Romagna are now major players in internationalisation also through exports:
between 2001 and 2006 the turnover of shareholdings abroad increased by 17.6%, touching the total of 19.7 billion. The Emilia-Romagna multinationals employ over 108 thousand through foreign shareholdings (data as of 2006). The long list of outgoing foreign investments of Emilia-Romagna companies are concentrated in industry, mainly food and mechanics, and in the wholesale industry, which alone covers around half of the foreign invested companies.
