The fashion sector, divided mainly between textile-clothing, footwear and accessories, is based on the presence of a large network of micro-businesses, dedicated to third-party contracting and niche production, boasting high quality manual and technical skills, alongside major companies belonging to well-known stylists of worldwide acclaim, which in Emilia-Romagna have set up their centres of creation and design as well as facilities for production.
The symbol of this sector is the district of Carpi: specialised in knitwear and garments, is in fact a main sector leader on a national level and employs 11 thousand with a turnover of over 11 billion euro. On the other hand, the footwear industry boasts a centre of specialisation in Romagna, and in particular in the district of Fusignano, in the province of Ravenna, with over 200 companies, employing 3 thousand.
The abilities for expansion and exports of some leading companies has led over time to a widespread local drive and constitutes an example that has gradually been imitated by new small dynamic businesses, activating processes of exponential growth and territorial specialisation.
